Organizing Challenges-The Procrastination Trap

When it comes to Organizing challenges,

Procrastination is neither a problem of time management

nor an indicator of laziness.

In fact, procrastinators are often overly conscientious individuals.

The secret to beating procrastination is to break through your psychological resistance.

  • Recognize the tension for what it is, but don’t allow it to control you.

Think about the task as “I choose to do it.”

You’re more committed to do that which you choose to do voluntarily.

1. Plan to work only 15 minutes at a time.

  • At the end of 15 minutes, you can choose to continue for another 15 minutes. Even if you don’t, you’ve accomplished something towards your goal.
Procrastination is a learned habit. 

You can retrain that habit. Like any other training, it takes practice.

No one can guarantee that you’ll never procrastinate again, but with practice, you’ll get more done and feel better about yourself.

It’s like exercising.  I get on the treadmill and I set the timer for short intervals so I can see the success of completing that first leg of the program.

2. Schedule the work that you are now choosing to do. Scheduling even the smallest of tasks into your day is a big key to your success.

  • First thing in the morning works well. Plan to get at least some of the work done and out of the way before you start anything else.



3. When you get stuck – take a break.

  • Go to the simple tasks for that project that you just know you can get done – i.e. spend 5 minutes sending out a few emails that are a part of that project.

When I hit a brick wall I go out and get a drink of water, put out the dog or even walk the dog. You just need to do something different. Your brain breaks away for those few minutes and sometimes that is all it takes to have a fresh perspective. Beating yourself up because you are stuck at that moment does not help.

If taking a break from your organizing challenges doesn’t work; likely your brain is tired and needs a rest from it. Re-Schedule.

Another Option:

If you truly dislike something could you delegate or trade with another person for something less hateful?

It might not work well in your workplace but what about at home or in volunteer roles?

Everything I’m sharing today can be done at home as you teach your kids how to avoid the “procrastination trap“ and being labeled as LAZY!
