Downsizing Seniors, Families & Professionals
The downsizing Midland process can be quite complex. Especially, since we now live in an era of consumerism. We are bombarded with advertising everywhere we go. And with technology at our finger tips it’s hard to get away from it. You’re out and you need directions so you google it. Up comes how many ads…need I say more about this. Everything is so easy to get and it can be delivered to your door.
I have a lovely 84 year old client, Stella, whom I downsized and moved from her home in Midland to a condo overlooking Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie 6 years ago. And 4 years ago at the age of 80 she sold her car.
She said she didn’t need to bother keeping up the maintenance of it nor the expense of having it. She said, I shop online at Zehrs, Speedy Delivery pickups up my order and brings it to my door for about $15. I shop on Amazon and it’s delivered to my door too. The city sends instructors for Yoga classes (now she follows on TV). The massage therapist and the physiotherapist come to my condo as well. I even have a library downstairs, and an exercise room and a swimming pool. I don’t even need to leave the building if I don’t want to, she laughed.
She went on to tell me that on nice days she goes out and catches the city bus or walks to the downtown. And her daughter Sarah comes over every Saturday so if she wants to go to Giant Tiger she drives her there.
This is absolutely wonderful, especially as you get older
if you are a stay at home mom.
One of young mom clients told me that she shops with Amazon Prime and gets deliveries 4-5 times per week. They are a one car family and she is a stay at home mom with a pet sitting business. If she needs to really get out for something she does so when her husband arrives home about 6 pm (now he’s working from home).
There are lots of great reasons for having easy access to everything we need but the problem is that many of us buy impulsively. And then, we end up with all this stuff that we don’t really need. And often, we don’t have the room to store it or it just takes up valuable real estate space in our homes.
I have 2 kinds of Downsizing Midland Clients – Seniors who have accumulated to much stuff in the past 30, 40, 50 plus years. And, some of those people have moved a few times and taken all the stuff with them.
I have some elderly clients that are 85 to 95 years old and they have kept everything because it might be of value one day. In their early years it was hard to get some of the basics that today we take for granted. During WWII you could not get tinfoil because all the metal was going to build war arms. My father would share about how they got an orange at Christmas in their stocking and how special that was. Not because tangerines were only available at Christmas but because they didn’t have access to fruit all year long like we do now. It didn’t matter how much money you had. Some things just were not readily available.
So, THEY KEPT EVERYTHING.
My 2nd kind of client are those that just love to shop. Because of advertising we believe that we need all these things. And, there comes a time when people just cannot manage all these things. They might be moving or perhaps not. Downsizing is just required to make their current home fit all the things that they and their family members truly need, use and love. That’s where I come in.
I get the call and I help them downsize all their stuff. I’ve had clients that thought they needed to move to a larger home and when we finished purging, paring down and adding organizing solutions, they realized they had plenty of space to comfortably live and enjoy their current home.

If you answer yes to one or more the following statements you likely need to start the downsizing Midland process:

- Are getting ready to retire or already retired
- Your house has become an empty nest
- The kids are grown and gone
