4 Simple Steps to Home Organization

Yes, it’s been a very and hot humid summer.

It’s been just as hot for home organization and downsizing.

Going or staying these 4 Simple Steps to Home Organization will help you get your home organization completed:

Home organization is always key. My Alliston clients are not moving right now but they are getting ready.

In everything I do with my clients I always go back to the basics.

1.   Get your Tools Together

  • Garbage Bags
  • Clear Bags
  • Boxes
  • Recycling Bins
  • Shredder  (optional)

2.  Start Small

  • Pick a room that has less sentimental attachment to you

Start with the bathroom or kitchen that does not hold the same emotional attachment to you as the bedroom, living room or a photo box kept in the attic.

3.  Create Four Piles

  • Throw Away – toss out all items that are garbage.
  • Recycle – all plastics, cans, paper and cardboard can be placed in your bins for curbside pickup.
Most electronics can be recycled in free bins in your local community.
  • Give Away – give items that you want to keep in the family to a child or grandchild now.
Or you can make a donation to a local charity
  • Sell –  you can Sell it at a garage sale, online or seek out an expert i.e. auctioneers, consignment stores

Clear bags are for donations or selling – never use garbage bags for items that are to be sold or donated. When purging and packing it is easy for you to become confused about where an item belongs. Therefore, only clear bags for donations or keeper items.

Mark boxes i.e. Sell, Donate, Keep.  And if it’s going to someone specific, write their name on it and the contents.

In addition, write on the clear bags with a permanent marker, labels and/or tape.

When packing/storing in bins – Label the bins.

Once you have selected the space you will work through,
continue in that area/room until it’s completely finished!

4.  Ask yourself the Following Questions:

  • Do I love it?
  •  When was the last time I used it?
  •  When was the last time I wore it?
  •  How many of these same items do I really need?
    and finally,
  •  What’s the worst thing that would happen if I got rid of it?

Asking yourself questions like these will help with the process. If you have not looked at or used these items in a long time chances are they are not very important and you wouldn’t miss them. If they hold sentimental or monetary value disperse of them now.

Rule of thumb, if you have not worn or used an item in the last year, Let it Go!

Sometimes it’s easier to work with an outside party who is not attached to your personal belongings.

Hire Outside Help or ask a friend or family to help you achieve your desired result.
